Bookselling as a Hobby and a Proftable Business

For a lot of independent booksellers, living each day with books is a sacred vocation. Through the years, historians and philosophers try to understand what is it that such addiction makes books for a passion. In the old days, collectors became integral selling antiquitarian, out of print and rare books then as a hobby and lifestyle. Then came the idea of why not help the community, recycle and even buy or sell books as a source of income. A lot of creative people considered such passion a daily vocation as it was the experience of going to bookstores, scouting, indexing and even packaging books as a career. When the internet and e-commerce age came, a new era was born in this industry. Not only did people got more educated why they do it, what will it take to make money, retire, raise a family and even help the community. I say this because I really commend independent booksellers as they are the pillars, examples and also some of the smartest entrepreneurs I have seen. ...

Democracy and Equality is Still Alive in America

Image
8PM Castro District of San Francisco, CA on the historic day of May 15, 2008, a day of liberation for equality and the legacy of Harvey Milk. What's suprising are the crowd merriers had a contingency of young liberals, straight men and women who believed in the sacred virtues of marriage but liberal as to what equality is all about. As any journalist, you have to deliver the facts from where the actual facts are indeed happening. Beer on brown bags, hugging and street dancing with festive music that one can just be amazed especially if you were not there during the era of the GLBT icon Harvey Milk. For some it could be artificially be emotionally exaggerating but only if you indeed get into the person's inner self would one understand what is it point in all of this. For decades, this issue has been a very sensitive subject as it relates to politics but all the issues of human rights, activism, racial and sexual discrimination, gender and marriage equality affect the psycho-soc...

Drowning in Debt News Article Revisited

Image
While browsing to my stack of Sunday newspapers, a prominent newspaper had an article about drowing in debt and giving advice on how to save. Though I sincerely believe in frugality and their intentions of giving sound financial advice, we should be reminded on how to be very careful when we at media create information to consumers. The working class especially is very ideologically incline in the power of information. What I mean is that when we focus on educating people to use let's say debit cards, let us not forget what is true frugality. Maybe, Cash spending and plastics also impact our initiatives to save the environment. Another area, I have seen which was number one was eating at home than eating out when government is trying it's best to fixed the so-called recessionary syndromes by asking people to use consumer spending. For me, it is not about spending but let us not forget marginalized sectors like the disabled and very chronically ill/senior humans. What about if i...

Affordability for Limited Income Earners, the in thing these days!

Image
Yes, thank God America is finally realizing what AFFORDABILITY is all about. Not cheap, dirt cheap, not antiques neither expensive as a piece of art deco. Gone are days that people don't understand value investing . Why does it always take a recession for us to know that it is not how much we pay for advertising to entice the consumer. It is about reputation , creating value, positive thinking and even nowadays going Green . All the discussions can be said about our mission of affordability but does it help me or you put food in our table? Or perhaps, too cheap to cost $0.01 and get what you deserve. It's not about what's in your wallet, it is the value of what you get! Long live to my fellow bloggers on creating things like the GNU org. and fighting for freedom of expression. Yours truly, Alex http://www.alexesguerra.com/

Which Presidentiable really cares for the Disabled?

One of the biggest issues in America's presidentiable race today is "HEALTH CARE". Yet, after all the blah, blah, blah about Universal Health Care, I guess my question is how far does these presidentail nominees really understand the lives of living with a disability. On the little public knowledge, I don't really know if neither one has a on-going disability as otherwise they might not be running at all. We know people like Elizabeth Edwards who is suffering from breast cancer. However, part of the politics on the Edwards campaign was focusing on what issues everyone is talking and arguing about. Perhaps, to get more limelight or spotlight or even media coverage. But just to reiterate that it was only then First Lady, Hillary Clinton who have some history for Universal Heatlh Care in America. However, changing the subject on a deeper plain, how does these candidate really understand disability and health care. It might be too specific but can be a way to find out wh...
